How to choose, in short

How we choose

We don't accept free products from manufacturers and we don't run lab tests. We compare manufacturer specifications, Amazon listings and patterns in verified buyer reviews, and we check that each model is genuinely available to UK buyers. Where a spec isn't published, we leave it out rather than guess. When you buy through our links we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you; it never decides the order of our picks.

Frequently asked questions

Are robot lawn mowers worth it in the UK?

For most lawns, yes, if you value your time. A robot mows little and often through the March to October season, so the grass never gets long enough to need collecting, and the fine clippings feed the lawn. It won't save money unless you currently pay someone to mow, but it frees up your weekends.

Do I need a boundary wire?

Not any more. Wired robots are still the cheapest and most reliable choice for small, regular lawns, but wire-free models using RTK, LiDAR or cameras now cover everything from small terraced gardens to large plots. They cost more and depend more on apps and connectivity.

Are robot mowers safe for hedgehogs?

The main risk is night mowing, because hedgehogs forage after dark and curl up rather than run. Set a daylight-only schedule, check long grass before the first run and leave a wild corner outside the mowing area. Obstacle-detecting cameras help but are not a substitute.

Can I leave a robot mower out in the rain?

Yes during the season: they are built to live outdoors and most have rain sensors that send them back to base. Mowing very wet grass is still best avoided. Over winter, clean the mower and store it somewhere dry and frost-free.

How do I stop my robot mower being stolen?

Choose a model with a PIN code, lift alarm and account lock, and if your lawn is visible from the street, GPS tracking. Keep the serial number, register the mower with the manufacturer and consider marking it with your postcode.
